Legal medical industry in Arizona
Arizona is among 15 states that have laws permitting eligible patients to consume medicinal marijuana for the treatment of approved conditions and terminal illnesses. Eligibility for a marijuana recommendation depends upon both type and severity of an illness, and all patients must first speak with a physician to determine if medical marijuana is the right treatment for them.
One of the debilitating medical conditions listed under the Medical Marijuana Act is HIV/AIDS. This is due in large part to the positive effects of medical marijuana that have been recognized by both by patients and a great number of extensive and even government sponsored studies.
Among these studies are the ones conducted by the Institute of Medicine (IOM), the U.K. House of Lords Science and Technology Committee, the most prominent institution focused on medical marijuana in Australia.
In context to AIDS as well as a number of other syndromes including chronic pain, the IOM concluded that “cannabinoid drugs might offer broad-spectrum relief not found in any other single medication.”
A 2007 Washington Post article covered one of the most notable studies in recent times, which involved government-grown marijuana. Throughout a period of five days patients smoked three marijuana cigarettes a day, and more than half reported significant pain reductions. Less than one quarter of the group which smoked the placebo cannabis, marijuana that had most of the cannabioids in it removed, reported similar results.
This research is supported by the fact that, for once, roughly one-quarter of AIDS Patients are consuming medical marijuana, and the vast majority of these patients reported “relief of anxiety and/or depression and improved appetite,” while a third also indicated a decrease in pain.
