Legal medical industry in Arizona
Arizona is among 15 states that have laws permitting eligible patients to consume medicinal marijuana for the treatment of approved conditions and terminal illnesses. Eligibility for a marijuana recommendation depends upon both type and severity of an illness, and all patients must first speak with a physician to determine if medical marijuana is the right treatment for them.
Those who suffer from epilepsy are allowed to consume medial marijuana legally in the state of Arizona, since cannabis has proven itself yet again to be a highly effective treatment. There are a number of medicines on the market today meant to treat epilepsy including Tegretol, Dilantin, Klonopin, Mysoline, and Zarontin. These can potentially cause very severe side effects such as anemia, headache, hair loss, depression, psychosis, gum swelling and impotence; something patients, particularly those who are required consume very large doses, need and obviously want to avoid.
Contrarily to these medications, medical marijuana may have very little (but usually none) mild side effects on a patient. Moreover, the therapeutic effects of marijuana on epilepsy patients and those who suffer from seizures in general are extremely beneficial in some cases, and often include complete control of seizures.
In addition to countless case studies, scientific research also indicated similar results.
Katherine Mortati, MD, a neurologist at the Comprehensive Epilepsy Center at SUNY Downstate Medical Center for example, conducted a small-scale research of the effects of medical marijuana on a 45-year old epilepsy patient.
She concluded that the cannabis had a beneficial effect on the subject, and that the "case supports other anecdotal data suggesting that marijuana use may be a beneficial adjunctive treatment in some patients with epilepsy." With the report being published in 2007, Mortati also noted that it was likely that legalization would need to become more widespread in time before Medical Marijuana would be accepted as an anti-epileptic treatment for seizures - thus showing the recent developments in certain state's adoption and legalization of the drug for those with certain illnesses.
